President:
A
Ugust
("Gene")
Carloni |
|
| The
year marked the
quincentennial
of Christopher
Columbus' s voyage
to the New World.
Carloni presented
"quincentennial
moments"
during each of
the monthly meetings,
up until October,
telling little
known facts of
the voyage. At
the October meeting,
Carloni celebrated
the anniversary
of 500 years from
the sighting of
the New World
by crying out,
"Land Ho!
They scored!"
It was during
Carloni's term
that the annual
dinner with the
justices of the
Supreme Court
first took place.
Speakers that
year included
state Sen. David
Roberti and Palm
Springs Mayor
Sonny Bono . (He
died April 9,
2007.) |

| Robert
Mallano was roasted
June 16, 1993
during the first
of his two one-year
terms as presiding
judge of the Los
Angeles Superior
Court. Chief Justice
Malcolm Lucas,
appearing at the
annual "Night
With the Supremes,"
made the first
public announcement
of his plan to
re-marry. Assembly
Speaker Willie
Brown presented
remarks at a joint
meeting with the
Langston Bar Assn.
and the Mexican
American Bar Assn.
District Attorney
Gil Garcetti was
also among the
year's line-up
of speakers. Membership
in the organization
picked up, and
the club started
accumulating a
surplus. |

| Los
Angeles Superior
Court Judge Charles
Frisco, often
a roaster, was
himself roasted
Nov. 16. The event
was in commemoration
of his forthcoming
descent from the
bench at the end
of the year. It
was an event marked
both by humor
and sentiment,
and included greetings,
via videotape,
from relatives
in Sicily. |

 |
| A
departure from
the usual format
of monthly meetings
occurred on March
22 with a one-man
show, "An
Evening With Clarence
Darrow,"
with actor Phil
Carey portraying
the famed lawyer.
A panel discussion
by journalists
on the O.J. Simpson
trial provoked
spirited oratory
and questioning
from a Superior
Court judge in
attendance. The
IALA directory
was expanded,
with the listing
of members under
their areas of
emphasis. The
MCLE program was
also expanded
that year. Meetings
were held in conjunction
with the Pasadena,
Glendale, Foothill,
Eastern, and San
Gabriel Valley
bars. |

|
| An
emphasis was placed
on the "Italian"
in "Italian-American
Lawyers,"
with a 50th birthday
party salute to
the Republic of
Italy in June,
a tribute to Italian-American
public officials
in August, and
a Christmas party
at Italian Hall
in December. The
salute to public
officials was
held in conjunction
with the National
Italian American
Foundation and
the Italy America
Chamber of Commerce
West and spotlighted
were Los Angeles
City Council President
John Ferraro,
Los Angeles District
Attorney Gil Garcetti,
state Sen. Cathie
Wright, Assemblyman
Wally Knox, Assemblywoman
Paula Boland,
and Assemblyman
James Rogan. |
