President:
Judith
Cannavo |
|
| There
was a change of
venue for the
installation ball,
with the group
assembling at
the restaurant
at Union Station.
Efforts instituted
under Chris Frisco's
administration
to secure state
Attorney General
Bill Lockyer as
a speaker came
to fruition, with
the help of Joe
Cerrell, a local
political consultant
who is president
of the National
Italian American
Foundation. The
organization's
25th anniversary
was celebrated
with a tribute
to the founders,
patterned after
one staged in
the 20th year,
in 1996. |

President:
Claire
Ambrosio |
|
 |
| Ambrosio,
an IALA scholarship
recipient in the
1990s as a law
student at Southwestern,
became active
in the organization
and worked her
way up the ranks,
ascending to the
presidency. While
the group has
held receptions
and hosted hospitality
suites at State
Bar conventions
through the years,
at various points
in the state, it
had not held a
meeting at an
out-of-county
bar convention
since 1977. At
the 2003 convention,
Italian American
attorney Tony
Capozzi of Fresno was
installed as president,
and the IALA feted
him at an Italian
restaurant in
Costa Mesa —
a sentimental
occasion attended
by members of
his family and
a contingency
from the Fresno
Bar Assn. |

President:
Phillip
Scuderi |
|
| Phillip
Scuderi, son of
longtime IALA
member Robert
Scuderi, drew
plaudits for returning
the installation
ball to the Friar's
Club. Speakers
included State
Bar President
Tony Capozzi,
Los Angeles City
Council members
Anthony Villaraigosa,
Tom LaBonge, and
Bernard Parks,
Los Angeles Police
Chief William
Bratton, and Orange
County Sheriff
Michael Carona. |

|
|
 |
| The
Installation Ball
took place at
the Castaways
in Burbank. The
March meeting
featured a roast
of past president
George Schiavelli,
recently appointed
to the U.S. District
Court. Schiavelli
then turned the
tables and roasted
the roasters.
"Gaelic and
Garlic Night"
was a huge success,
with the IALA
presenting a soprano
and the Irish
Bar offering a
barbershop quartet.
In August, there
was "Sports
Night" featuring
three former pro
football players,
with a special
birthday tribute
to Joe Cerrell,
immediate past
president of the
National Italian
American Foundation. |

|
|
President:
Alfred
Coletta |
|
| There
was a new venue
for the installation
ball: the Equestrian
Center. The February
speaker was Watergate
prosecutor Ken
Starr, and in
March, it was
state Sen. Joe
Dunn, a candidate
for state controller
(who lost in the
November run-off). Others
included Steve
Westly, a gubernatorial
hopeful (who lost
in the Democratic
primary) and state
Attorney General
Bill Lockyer,
a candidate for
state treasurer
(who won). |

|
President:
Michael
R. Diliberto
|
|
 |
| The
Installation Ball
took place at
the elegant Jonathan
Club in downtown
Los Angeles. DiLiberto
at the outset
of his term announced
meetings he planned
for the entire
year. "The
First Annual 'Hall
of Fame' Night"
featured tributes
to U.S. District
Judge George P.
Schiavelli, a
past IALA president;
political consultant
Joseph R. Cerrell,
vice chair of
the National Italian
American Foundation,
and attorney Tom
Girardi. A talk
on “Appellate
Court Practice-Pitfalls
and Pointers”
was presented
by Court of Appeal
Justices Robert
M. Mallano and
Kathy Doi Todd.
